GREAT ANXIETY ARTIST NOTE

GREAT ANXIETY is a large-scale installation that gives form to the collective unease triggered by the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. Echoing the term “Great Depression,” “Great Anxiety” is a phrase I use to describe widespread fears of AI-driven job displacement, loss of agency, and existential uncertainty.

Technological breakthroughs, the proliferation of large language models, and escalating investment speculation have coincided with a sharp rise in public anxiety—particularly since 2024. GREAT ANXIETY translates these abstract data patterns into a visceral, synesthetic experience that unfolds throughout the space.

A vast membrane of metallic film responds sensitively to natural and artificial light, reflecting, scattering, and casting deep shadows. The atmosphere periodically shifts in abrupt reversals: stark red light floods the space, the tranquil soundscape gives way to a heavy, spatially transformative bass, and motors connected to the film activate in unison. The metallic membrane then oscillates irregularly, rendering the otherwise invisible flow of data as a monumental physical wave. The frequency of these cycles is informed by patterns in AI-related data recorded since 2020.

Here, metallic film, light, and sound converge into a single sensory field, causing La Chaufferie—Fondation Fiminco’s iconic industrial space—to seem to undulate with the lingering traces of data. This sudden atmospheric transformation becomes both a warning and a moment of awakening. Visitors encounter AI as a reality that is at once beautiful and unsettling, entering a meditative space for reflection beyond anxiety.
