ARTIST STATEMENT

This project is a collaboration with Dassault Systèmes, a French Fortune 50 multinational software corporation which develops software for 3D product design, simulation, manufacturing and other 3D-related products.

"In January 2023, Dassault Systèmes revealed Urban Renaissance, a stunning 3D mapping project by Korean artist and professor Dr Yiyun Kang to illustrate the city of tomorrow. Urban Renaissance is the Dassault Systèmes' most recent instalment in ‘The Only Progress is Human’ initiative, which seeks to inspire people by sharing the 10 biggest challenges of our age and how humanity may help solve them."

This work is my artistic response to the Dassault system’s vision of redesigning our city. The imageries will be mapped onto the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), Zaha Hadid’s iconic architecture designed using CATIA solution.

To illustrate the vision of <THE ONLY PROGRESS IS HUMAN | ACT 4: THE CITY>, my work's narrative unfolds from macro to micro scale, from static city to biodiverse environment, and from things to life. Future life should be more sustainable for all inhabiting creatures, encompassing human, non-human and even digital entities. Therefore, the future city needs to be a creative and innovative hub that challenges our current crisis and disrupts the existing perspectives. 

I titled this piece GEOFUTURE. Rather than using ‘urban’ or ‘city’ that is only limited to humanity’s territory, I wanted to imagine a future of a cohabiting environment, where human, nature and technology empowers each other. Dassault Systems’ Virtual Twin solution will be an empowering compass to make our city a genuinely progressive construction. As a result, this campaign will give the audience a meaningful and compelling experience to rethink our current life so that we can reinvent the world we live in.
